Heinrich August Marschner was a key figure in German Romantic opera, with Der Vampyr and Hans Heiling standing as a bridge between the works of Weber and Wagner. Marschner and Weber became firm friends, and it was Weber who promoted the historical ‘rescue opera’ Heinrich IV und D’Aubigné in Dresden in 1820. Including rarities such as ballet fragments, the richly Romantic opening to a proposed piano concerto, an early symphony and rustic sounds both spectacular and serene from incidental music to the play Waldmüllers Margret, this is a unique collection that overflows with unexpected delights and surprises.
